More homeowners are asking AI tools questions like "Who's a good electrician near me?" or "How much does a water heater replacement cost?" instead of scrolling through ten blue links. Getting your business into those answers is called AEO, or answer engine optimization. Here's what it means for a local contractor and what you can actually do about it, from The Net Building Company.
AEO is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand, trust, and quote in their answers.
Traditional SEO aims to rank a page in Google's results. AEO aims to get your business named, or your page cited, when ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, or similar tools answer a question. The two overlap heavily. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and there's no special markup required to appear in AI Overviews (Google Search Central: AI features and your website).
They pull from websites they can crawl, search indexes, business listings, review sites, and discussions across the web.
For a local contractor, the main sources are:
If your information is missing, inconsistent, or blocked, AI tools have less to work with and are more likely to name a competitor.
Check that your robots.txt and firewall don't block the search crawlers AI tools use.
Some hosting and security services can block AI bots by default. OpenAI, for example, documents separate crawlers for search (OAI-SearchBot) and for model training (GPTBot), and site owners can allow one and block the other (OpenAI crawler documentation). For a local business that wants to be recommended, allowing search crawlers is usually the right call. Blocking training-only crawlers is a separate choice you can make.
Also confirm you have a working sitemap.xml and that your site is verified in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing's index powers several AI search experiences, so don't skip it.
Write pages that answer the questions homeowners actually ask, with a clear one-sentence answer up top.
AI tools favor content that answers a question cleanly. Good examples for trades:
Put a short, direct answer first, then the details. Add a FAQ section to each service page. Keep answers honest and specific to your area and trade. Don't invent numbers. If prices vary, explain what drives the price.
Use the exact same business name, phone, address or service area, and categories on your site and every listing.
AI tools cross-check sources. If your website says "Smith Plumbing," Google says "Smith Plumbing & Rooter Inc.," and Yelp has an old phone number, that's three different signals. Pick one version and update everything to match. Your full business name matters too. Short names and acronyms can be confused with bigger brands.
Schema markup tells search engines and AI tools in plain code who you are, what you do, and where you work.
Useful types for contractors include:
Schema won't guarantee AI placement, but it removes guesswork about your business.
Steady, recent reviews and mentions on trusted sites are some of the strongest signals AI tools use to recommend a local business.
Never buy fake reviews. Platforms remove them, and they can get your listing penalized.
Pages that show who you are, your license, and real work you've done are more trustworthy to people and to AI tools.
Include your license number, years in business, owner name and photo, real job photos, and service areas. Write about local specifics: housing age, common problems in your area, local permit rules. Generic copy that could apply to any city is easy for AI tools to ignore.
Ask new customers how they found you, and test your own visibility in AI tools every month.
AI referrals are still hard to measure perfectly. Practical steps:
Every site we build includes on-site SEO with schema, a sitemap, service and town pages, and FAQ content written to be quoted. Growth and Pro plans add Google Business Profile posting and a review-request system, and Pro includes our Nextdoor alert bot. Plans run $199, $299, or $399 per month, first month free, no long-term contract.
Is AEO different from SEO? AEO builds on SEO; the same foundations apply, with extra focus on direct answers, consistent business info, and off-site mentions.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers? Not through any standard organic recommendation; you earn mentions through good content, listings, and reviews.
Should I block AI bots from my website? If you want AI tools to recommend you, allow their search crawlers; blocking training-only crawlers is a separate choice.
How long does AEO take? Like SEO, it builds over months, though fixing blocked crawlers or broken listings can help sooner.
Does my Google Business Profile matter for AI search? Yes; it's one of the most important sources of local business information for Google's AI features.
Want to know if AI tools can even see your site? Our free website audit includes an AEO section. The Net Building Company will email you a plain-English report with what to fix.
